Shopify + ChatGPT Shopping: A Setup Guide for Merchants

If you run a Shopify store and you've been trying to figure out what exactly you need to build to show up in ChatGPT, here's the short answer that most guides bury on page two: for the vast majority of merchants, you don't build anything. Shopify already plugs your catalog into ChatGPT through its own infrastructure. The real work is making sure your product data, policies, and admin settings are actually configured well enough for that pipe to do its job.

This guide walks through exactly how the Shopify-ChatGPT connection works today, what changed since OpenAI's original Instant Checkout launch with Etsy in September 2025, and the specific settings you need to check in your Shopify admin. I'm writing this in late August 2026, and this space has moved fast enough that guides from even six months ago describe a setup that no longer matches what's live. I'll flag where that's the case.

The short version: what's automatic and what isn't

Shopify merchants get pulled into AI shopping surfaces through a system called Agentic Storefronts, which Shopify rolled out broadly to eligible stores starting in early 2026. The mechanism is your existing Shopify Catalog data (the same product feed that already powers Google Shopping and Meta) getting syndicated to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and, as it rolls out, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Per Shopify's own Agentic Storefronts documentation, no app installation is required in your admin for this to work. It's on by default for eligible stores.

That's genuinely good news if all you want is discoverability. It's also where a lot of confusion creeps in, because "discoverable in ChatGPT" and "purchasable inside ChatGPT" are two different things, and right now they don't mean the same thing for every AI surface.

ChatGPT is a referrer today, not an in-chat checkout, for most Shopify stores

This is the part that trips people up, because the original OpenAI announcement in 2025 described a fully in-chat purchase flow: pick a product, buy it, never leave the conversation. That's still true for merchants using the Agentic Commerce Protocol directly, the open standard Stripe co-developed with OpenAI, and it's how Etsy sellers and some direct integrators operate.

But according to reporting from Digital Commerce 360 in March 2026, Shopify shifted its own approach away from native in-chat purchasing. Shopify's own help documentation now describes ChatGPT as a discovery-focused referrer: a shopper finds your product in a ChatGPT conversation, then completes the purchase on your actual online store, either in an in-app browser inside the ChatGPT mobile app or in a new browser tab. No redirect friction added on your end, but also no purchase happening natively inside the chat window.

Microsoft Copilot, by contrast, does support genuine direct checkout for Shopify merchants right now. Per Shopify's help documentation, customers can complete a purchase inside Copilot without leaving the conversation, activated by default for eligible US stores, with no extra platform fee beyond your standard payment processing costs. Google AI Mode and the Gemini app are listed as early access and "rolling out soon" as of the same documentation, not yet available to every store.

Here's the state of play by AI surface, as documented by Shopify's own help center at the time of writing:

AI SurfaceDiscovery via Shopify Catalog?In-app checkout?Notes
ChatGPTYes, by default for eligible storesNo, referral to your storefrontShopper completes checkout in an in-app browser or new tab
Microsoft CopilotYesYes, direct checkoutActive by default; standard payment fees only; US customers only
Google AI Mode / GeminiEarly access, rolling outNot yet broadly availableStore gets an admin notification when eligible
PerplexityNot part of Shopify's Agentic Storefronts as of writingN/A via ShopifyPerplexity's own shopping features run separately from this Shopify pipeline

Two important caveats. First, this table reflects Shopify's stated setup as of this writing. Given how much this shifted between September 2025 and March 2026 already, expect it to keep changing, and re-check the Shopify Help Center before you plan anything around it long-term. Second, being discoverable is not the same as being recommended. Getting your catalog synced is the entry ticket, not the thing that gets you cited over a competitor selling the same product. We cover the ranking mechanics separately in our guide to how ChatGPT Shopping actually works.

Step-by-step: setting up your Shopify store for ChatGPT

Assuming your store is eligible (more on that below), here's the actual checklist:

  • Check your eligibility first: your store needs to sell to customers in the United States, and you need published Terms of Service, a Privacy Policy, and a Refund/Return Policy. Shopify's documentation lists these as hard requirements before your catalog can be used in agentic channels.
  • Go to Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin: this is the control panel for everything covered here. If you don't see it yet, your store hasn't been rolled into the program, and you'll get an admin notification when it is.
  • Read and accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service: you can't proceed without this, and it's a separate agreement from your standard Shopify Terms of Service.
  • Decide whether to let Shopify manage catalog access automatically: the default setting is "Allow Shopify to manage for me," which auto-enrolls you into new AI channels as they launch. Turn this off if you want to approve each new channel manually, and turn off "Auto enroll new storefronts" specifically if you want the syncing but not the automatic expansion to new platforms.
  • Set your direct checkout preference per channel: for Microsoft Copilot, you choose whether customers buy directly in Copilot or get redirected to your store, same toggle logic will likely apply as Google AI Mode direct checkout expands. ChatGPT currently doesn't offer this choice since it's referral-only.
  • Clean up the product data feeding your Shopify Catalog: this is the step most merchants skip and the one that actually determines whether you get surfaced for the right queries. Fill in GTINs/barcodes where you have them, keep inventory counts accurate, write specific product titles instead of SKU codes, and make sure every listed product has at least one usable image. AI shopping surfaces pull from the same catalog feed that already powers Google Shopping, so fixing it here compounds across every channel at once.
  • Verify your store policies are actually linked and current: a placeholder refund policy page or a broken link to your terms can quietly disqualify your catalog from these programs even after initial approval.
  • Watch your admin for new channel notifications: Google AI Mode and Gemini access is rolling out gradually rather than to every store at once, so there's genuinely nothing to configure until Shopify tells you it's available.

What about the "ChatGPT Shopping API" people keep searching for

There's no single OpenAI product literally called the "ChatGPT Shopping API." What people usually mean is one of two things, and they lead to different amounts of work depending on your platform.

The first is the Agentic Commerce Protocol itself, the open specification OpenAI and Stripe published for how a buyer, an AI agent, and a merchant's backend exchange order and payment data. If you're building a custom integration outside of a major platform, OpenAI's own developer documentation at developers.openai.com/commerce spells out the feed format (CSV, TSV, XML, or JSON, submitted via SFTP or API) and a refresh cadence of roughly every 15 minutes.

The second thing people mean is simply "how do I get my Shopify products into ChatGPT," which, as covered above, is not an API integration you build at all. It's the Agentic Storefronts setup inside your Shopify admin. If a freelancer or agency is quoting you for custom ACP development work and you're a standard Shopify merchant, ask them directly why the built-in Shopify Catalog syncing isn't sufficient for your case. Sometimes there's a legitimate reason (a headless storefront not running on standard Shopify checkout, for instance), but often there isn't.

Common mistakes Shopify merchants make with this setup

  • Assuming "enabled" means "optimized": your catalog can sync successfully and still underperform in ChatGPT results if your titles are generic, your images are missing, or your inventory data is stale. Syncing is a prerequisite, not a ranking strategy.
  • Leaving "Allow Shopify to manage for me" on without checking what it enrolled you into: this setting is convenient, but it means you can end up live on a channel you never deliberately reviewed. Check Sales channels > Agentic periodically, don't set it once and forget it.
  • Ignoring the policy page requirements until it's too late: stores get flagged or excluded over missing or thin refund and privacy policies far more often than over anything product-related.
  • Treating this identically to Google Shopping optimization: the underlying feed is shared, but conversational shopping surfaces weight things like clear, question-answerable product descriptions differently than a traditional shopping tab does. A listing optimized purely for a search-style shopping grid doesn't always read well when an AI model is summarizing it in a sentence.
  • Not distinguishing ChatGPT's referral model from Walmart's or Copilot's checkout model: if you're benchmarking your setup against a competitor's coverage, remember they might be running a different checkout arrangement entirely. We break down how a large retailer's own direct arrangement works in our piece on the Walmart and OpenAI partnership, which is a genuinely different mechanism from the standard Shopify Agentic Storefronts path.

How to tell if any of this is actually working

Once your catalog is syncing, the honest answer is that visibility inside ChatGPT is hard to measure directly today. There's no dashboard inside Shopify that says "here's how many ChatGPT conversations mentioned your brand." A few practical ways to get a read on it anyway:

  • Watch referral traffic in your analytics: since ChatGPT sends shoppers to your actual storefront, look for new referral sources or unusually high-intent sessions landing directly on product pages rather than your homepage. This won't always be cleanly labeled, so check your server logs or Shopify's own traffic reports, not just GA4's default channel grouping.
  • Run your own product queries in ChatGPT regularly: ask the kinds of questions a real shopper would ("best waterproof hiking boots under $150") and note whether your brand shows up, and where. Doing this consistently by hand across dozens of queries gets old fast, which is exactly the gap a tool like AI Peekaboo is built to close, tracking your brand's mentions and citation share across ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini over time instead of one-off spot checks.
  • Track it the same way you'd track any other visibility metric: if you're already tracking ChatGPT visibility for content, not just shopping, the same monitoring principles apply. Our breakdown of the best ChatGPT visibility trackers covers tools that handle this kind of ongoing tracking, several of which also cover shopping-specific citations.

Where this is likely headed next

A few things are worth keeping an eye on if you're planning ahead rather than just fixing today's setup. Direct checkout inside ChatGPT hasn't disappeared as a concept, Etsy and some direct ACP integrators still run it, so it's plausible Shopify revisits a native option if merchant demand pushes for it. Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout are explicitly labeled early access right now, meaning most Shopify stores simply don't have a decision to make there yet beyond waiting for the admin notification. And given how much changed between the original Instant Checkout announcement and the current Agentic Storefronts model in under a year, I'd treat any specific claim about checkout mechanics, including the ones in this article, as accurate for right now rather than permanent. Bookmark Shopify's own help documentation and check it before making any bigger investment decision around this.

Getting this right without guessing

If you'd rather have someone track whether your Shopify catalog is actually getting surfaced and cited across ChatGPT, Copilot, and the other AI shopping surfaces, that's the core of what we do at AI Peekaboo. We monitor brand and product visibility across the major AI platforms so you're working from real data instead of anecdotal spot checks. Email filipe@aipeekaboo.com or book 30 minutes on Calendly if you want a walkthrough of where your store currently stands.
